Car ownership has never felt more satisfying and personal in driving games than in this slightly janky but beautifully esoteric builder-meets-racer. Venerated for decades and still playable in , Grand Prix 3 was a turning point in racing games. Grand Prix 3 was a new level of fidelity. It modelled things like tyre wear, wet weather grip, and tiny setup tweaks - things that games had only been able to approximate in the broadest manner previously.

Simply put, it felt like sitting inside a Formula One car. And to look back on today as a playable museum piece, it has the added incentive of capturing the sport at an especially exciting time, when legends like Schumacher and Hakkinen were battling for top spot and previous champions Damon Hill and Jacques Villeneuve struggled at the back of the pack.

This is the descendant of SimBin's once-mighty racing empire. Think of it as GTR Online: it's the ruthlessly-authentic car sim you remember, but retooled for online free-to-play. The GT racing is beautifully modelled and captured through a good force feedback wheel, the online competition fierce and well-structured, and the catalog of cars and tracks deep enough to really specialise in a certain series thanks to that free-to-play model.

Which is also its weakness. Once you get the cars on the track, it's all terrific and familiar. But off-track, RaceRoom is all about selling you bits and pieces of the game. Pick a series you want to race, and immerse yourself in it. There's more than enough to learn about vintage touring cars to occupy you for months, if not years, before you need to go dribbling over the in-game store menu again.

Autosport is Codemasters' easiest, most entry-level track racing game. The car handling is very forgiving, but with just enough fight in it to teach you the basics of corner-braking and throttle-control.

Outside the car it does as deep as you're up for, though. It's got full-race weekends, typically strong opponent AI for Codemasters, and tons of variety in its racing formats. With the ability to "shift" between NPC cars at-will, Driver:SF is one of the only post-Paradise open-world racers to think of something fresh and new to do with the freedom of the open world. In truth the brilliance of its central idea does outweigh the feel of its handling, which aims for Need For Speed but doesn't quite excite in the same way.

It's still rough and ready enough to power a brilliantly odd story and bring San Francisco to life, though. Welcome to the Michael Bay Motorsports Hour, where fake sports cars will rocket through desolate, orange-filtered urban wastelands at blinding speed while drivers accumulate enough energy to trigger bomb-drops from overhead helicopters, vicious sweeps from out-of-control cranes, and even the odd explosion of an entire city block.

Racing games aren't often treated to remasters. If your favourites aren't in here, have you checked you're not into horse racing instead? As befitting of a game with a production budget that would match the GDP of a small country, Forza 7 is also visually stunning.

This semi-sim pushes current top-end Xbox hardware to its absolute limits with its silky 60 frames per second motion and crisp 4K visuals. It's like a spa weekend for your eyeballs. But those three people will have been treated to one of the most exhilarating and underappreciated multiplayer racers of all time. Blur took real cars and real locations, but then crammed them full of Mario Kart-inspired power-ups and more neon lighting than an 80s themed nightclub. The result was a game that had two major sources of satisfaction: legitimately rewarding handling and the air-punching joy of clattering your mate with the game's legally distinct equivalent of a red shell.

It shouldn't have worked but it absolutely did, like the chocolate covered pretzel of racing games. Unlike that particular delicacy, it was also unashamedly British, so more traditional racing game locations like downtown San Francisco and Tokyo were joined by the chicken shop lined streets of Shoreditch and the beach front in Brighton.

The only thing missing was torrential, unending rain. We'd be curious to know what old Ernie would have made of Rocket League, which is a bit like his beloved motor sport but instead combines kerosene-powered cars, a giant football and literal explosions when you score. Not enough dead bulls for him, probably. We'll confess, Rocket League is a driving game in only the very loosest sense of the word, in that you'll spend a good proportion of your time airborne, but we're claiming this brilliant multiplayer sports game as our own regardless.

As we've established many a time on TG TV, football is infinitely better with the addition of wheels, not least because we've never had a goal disallowed by VAR in Rocket League Presumably while the perp is busy getting away. Still, chasing them down again as the fuzz was the most fun part of Hot Pursuit, with each improbably expensive 'cruiser' loaded with with spike strips, EMPs and deployable roadblocks.

The racers, meanwhile, have additional boost and a defensive jammer, making for a perfectly balanced police chase. This all played out on the beautiful, sweeping roads of an open world and blended Need for Speed's garage full of licensed exotica with Burnout's face distorting speed and crunching takedowns. Credit: Codemasters. F1 is the latest title in the Formula 1 series, and the newest game on this list.

Featuring an up-to-date roster of drivers, cars, and tracks, in F1 players can compete seasons, manage their own F1 team, and even take part in the new Braking Point story mode. Playing as a young rookie named Aiden Jackson, players will start in Formula 2 and build their way up to Formula 1. Think Lewis Hamilton vs Nico Rosberg, but in the virtual world and with far less sabotage. Looking for more of a challenge?

Forza Horizon 4. Credit: Microsoft. Forza Horizon 4 is the perfect road trip through the UK in video game form. Featuring a condensed rendition of Britain, the fourth game in the series allows players to cruise across Edinburgh, the Cotswolds, and even the Lake District.

It takes the best parts of Britain but leaves out the endless queues and disappointing weather. Forza Horizon perfectly captures the feeling of going for a Sunday drive. Placing the emphasis on enjoying the car, your surroundings, and finding a suitable soundtrack. Rather than demanding the perfect driving line, Forza just wants you to drive fast.

It accomplishes this with manageable controls that make every car accessible and fun. Driving a supercar at mph is no easy task. However, Forza Horizon 4 makes it feel like a big, fast toy. This accessibility is what makes 4 such a fantastic driving game because anyone can play it. Gran Turismo Sport Credit: Sony. Fans and journalists criticised Gran Turismo Sport on release because of its lack of content.
