It's also important that Sam is doing all of these things, not out of curiosity or ego, but because there's a tangible connection to the past. And while it feels personal, he really wants to ensure no one on the island is at risk, especially Epona, so it's not about him alone. This twist of this apparent ghost, Sam's lust for a visitor named Jess, the visions of death, the fact the natives are split between welcoming Sam and wanting his head for being an outsider that Epona likes all paint a more cerebral story with curveballs The Wicker Man and Midsommar didn't have.
It helps the audience forgive Sam for running from many issues back home -- his strained marriage, two supposed daughters, bribery in his business practice -- as he falls into a trap. The thing is, it's unclear if Epona or the hospitality he receives is bait as subtle yet intriguing clues are seeded out his presence could be tied to his grandfather from the war being stationed there decades ago, or from Sam himself maybe having PTSD and blocking out memories from previously being there.
Regardless, there's a lot more foundation laid out in a story that runs deep, and while Sam may be in an inescapable hole he should have seen coming miles away, given his shady past, he may not be a victim after all.

The fictional HBO series about the deathly superstitious inhabitants of an English island is spooky in more ways than one. Islands with inhabitants who have unorthodox religious practices get a pretty bad rap in pop culture.
Even if the correlation between burning a virginal police officer and saving dying crops to satisfy pagan gods is, um, a little suspect.
After she comes to and refuses to discuss what happened, Sam drives her back to her home: an island called Osea that is accessible for only a few hours a day on a narrow causeway when the tide is low. As these tales usually go, Sam must spend the night on Osea Island after failing to leave before the ocean swallows up the road.
And he soon learns more about the people, the ways they intertwine Christianity with their worship of a Celtic war god!! If this were me, though, I would drive my car up to the causeway entrance, climb inside, lock the door, and refuse to open it or speak to anyone until I could get myself off that damn island the next day. No question. The end. Jude Law does not take my advice, though! He stays on the island, insistent on figuring out what the deal is with these strange people.

Home turns out to be Osea Island, which can be reached only when the sole access road isn't flooded by the tides. As Sam drops the young lady off, he is welcomed warmly by her parents.
But not all appears as it first looks At this point we are 10 min. Couple of comments: this is a TV mini-series that consists of 6 episodes broken into two separate but related parts "Summer" and "Winter".
Episode 1 takes its time to establish and other than what I described in the opening 10 min. I really don't want to give away much further. Suffice it to say that strange things are a-brewing on the isle. Jude Law as Sam is all over this, as he appears in virtually every frame of the episode. Keep an eye out as well for Emily Watson, the other big name in this series, as the mother of the young lady.
But the real star of this so far happens to be Osea Island, off England's east coast. The photography is striking with very vivid colors. Check out the aerial footage that clearly shows the sole access road when it is or isn't flooded by the incoming tide. The opening episode gets better as it moves along, and by the very end, things are feeling outright creepy if not paranoid.
Can't wait to see where the next episodes will take us. If you are in the mood for a different and very British type of mystery TV series, I'd readily suggest you check this out, and draw your own conclusion. A mother and her 2 daughters about 14 and 10 arrive on the isle having booked an Airbnb last minute reservation, only to be denied access when the owner sees that the family is black. With time running out, the mother is frantically searching for a place for them to stay.
And what is the connection to the first 3 episode cycle? Just watch, it's an absolute stunner Details Edit.
